Weekend Worship Review - 5/20/18

sunday review

In yesterday's sermon we saw from Galatians 5:16-24 that the normal Christian exprience is the reality of the struggle between our flesh and the Spirit. Here are a few thoughts "in review" and the songs we sang during our worship service.

For review... when the apostle Paul speaks here of the flesh, what he means is the sin-desiring aspect of our whole being as opposed to the God-desiring aspect. It is the part of us that is still being sanctified. I often think of the flesh as the habits that remain in us even as we are in fact a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).

And according to Galatians 5:17 the flesh desires against the Spirit (who lives in us), and the Spirit desires against the flesh. This is the opposition and it is real. This is the struggle. Every honest Christian knows this difficult reality.

But there is hope! Here are my concluding points that I need to remember and "preach" to myself. Maybe you need to do the same as well.

  • If we belong to Jesus we HAVE crucified the flesh with its desires (Galatians 2:20; 5:24). "He breaks the power of canceled sin" the hymn declares.
  • If we belong to Jesus we HAVE the Holy Spirit living in us and He is in fact the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. Resurrection power lives in us! This is one of my favorite promises from God (Romans 8:11).
  • If we live today by the Holy Spirit, we will not gratify the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
  • Live by the Holy Spirit. Be led by the Holy Spirit. He is the main ingredient in our lives.
