October 4, 2009 Speaker: Paul Ortlinghaus Series: From Stress To Rest

Topic: Topical

The first part of this sermon was a video by financial expert Dave Ramsey.  His points concerning the "Basics of Biblical Finance" were:

  1. Get out of debt.
  2. Act your wage.
  3. Get on a budget.
  4. Save and invest.
  5. Give.

Following the video, Pastor Paul followed up with the following principles of giving:

  • First - We should give systematically and in proportion to our ability (1 Corinthians 16:2)
  • Second - We should give generously and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7)
  • Third - Tithing???

The practice of Tithing (giving 10% of your income) is biblical (not just limited to "the law") and Jesus even affirmed its place (Matthew 23:23).  Tithing really should be a starting place for us in our giving even while keeping the above principles in mind (in other words, if you can give more - do it!).  Don't wait to give until you are out of debt.  Watch God prove Himself faithful as you give and work to manage your money in a biblical manner.

Seek God - after all our money is actually HIS money.  We are simply managers or stewards of it.
