Elijah & the prophets of Baal
February 17, 2019 Speaker: Paul Ortlinghaus Series: 66 Books: The whole story from Genesis to Revelation
Topic: Bible Passage: 1 Kings 18:20–18:39
The story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal pushes us to ask what the story teaches us about God, what the story teache us about ourselves, and therefor how we should respond.
In the Conclusion of the sermon, Pastor Paul referenced the book The Ten Commandments by Kevin DeYoung and the following four closing questions.
- Whom do you praise (adoration)? You may compliment your children, spouse, and friends, but who receives your hightest praise?
- Whom do you count on (trust)? Sure, God works through means, such as doctors, insurance companies, and prescription medicine, but when you really are in need, who do you know will always come through?
- Whom do you call for (invocation)? Where do you look for answers? Where do you turn for purpose and joy? Is it food, work, TV, your phone, or the God of the universe?
- Whom do you thank? Where do your good days come from? Who made the trees and the stars and the cooing little baby?
