The first part of this sermon was a video by financial expert Dave Ramsey. His points concerning the "Basics of Biblical Finance" were:
- Get out of debt.
- Act your wage.
- Get on a budget.
- Save and invest.
- Give.
Following the video, Pastor Paul followed up with the following principles of giving:
- First - We should give systematically and in proportion to our ability (1 Corinthians 16:2)
- Second - We should give generously and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7)
- Third - Tithing???
The practice of Tithing (giving 10% of your income) is biblical (not just limited to "the law") and Jesus even affirmed its place (Matthew 23:23). Tithing really should be a starting place for us in our giving even while keeping the above principles in mind (in other words, if you can give more - do it!). Don't wait to give until you are out of debt. Watch God prove Himself faithful as you give and work to manage your money in a biblical manner.
Seek God - after all our money is actually HIS money. We are simply managers or stewards of it.
